UKRAINE WAR NEGOTIATIONS START NOW, TRUMP SAYS AFTER A CALL WITH PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN
President Donald Trump announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to "start negotiations immediately" to end the war in Ukraine. 🇷🇺🇺🇸.
Trump described his February 12 call with Putin as "highly productive", a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he and the Russian president had "agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately" and invited each other to visit their respective capitals.
Trump also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who confronted their discussion about peace efforts.
He did not set a date for a face-to-face meeting with Putin, but later told reporters at the White House: "We'll meet in Saudi Arabia."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin supports a ceasefire and invited Trump to Moscow for further talks. This marks Trump's first direct contact with Putin since taking office on January 20.
The president said he agreed with his Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who told a Nato summit earlier on Wednesday that there was no likelihood of Ukraine joining the military alliance.
"I think that's probably true," Trump said.
