Former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari is dead

Former President, Muhammadu Buhari, 82 has been confirmed dead.

The confirmation was posted by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, and his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Garba Shehu short statement reads:

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London.

May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”


Recall that former President, Muhammadu Buhari was on many occasions hospitalised in London during his tenure as Nigeria’s 

After the pandemic lockdown, former President Muhammadu Buhari resumed health trips on Mar 30 to mid-April 2021.

In May 2025, the former President took his last known medical ‘routine check up’ to London which was around the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) 50th anniversary.

He sent a letter to the delegation in Lagos, through President Bola Tinubu, wishing the African leaders well.

Few weeks back, reports surfaced that the former President was in the Intensive Care Unit on an undisclosed London hospital.

He was confirmed dead on Sunday, 13th July, 2025.


Former President Muhammadu Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2019.

He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985.

President Tinubu has ordered flags at half-staff as a mark of respect for the departed leader.


In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, Information and Strategy, President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences.

President Tinubu has also ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the United Kingdom to accompany President Muhammadu Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
