“They want chop from the Pity Party”: Rooboy Throws Shade at “Imisi”

The Big Brother Naija Season 10 house is already heating up with mind games, strategies, and alliances. Last night, one of the housemates, Rooboy, stirred conversation after making a bold statement during a chat with fellow housemate Faith.

He said:

“Some people are looking like maybe this girl is playing poverty role and if you are close to her you go chop from the pity party…only few people here are standing alone.”

This remark has quickly gained attention, as many fans are trying to decode what exactly Rooboy meant.

What Did Rooboy Mean?

Rooboy was essentially accusing a fellow housemate of deliberately leaning into a “poverty narrative” as a strategy to gain sympathy from viewers. In other words, he suggested that she might be presenting herself as coming from a disadvantaged background to win pity votes and secure a strong fan base.

By saying, “If you are close to her you go chop from the pity party”, he implied that housemates aligning themselves with her might also benefit from the sympathy her story generates. His final remark, “only few people here are standing alone,” suggests that many housemates are playing the game through associations and not by their own individuality.

The “Poverty Card” in BBNaija History

Rooboy’s comment isn’t coming from nowhere. Over the years, Big Brother Naija has seen housemates win or go far in the game by appealing to viewers with their "grass-to-grace" stories. Nigerians are deeply emotional and often rally behind contestants who represent resilience against hardship.

Efe Ejeba (BBNaija 2017 – “See Gobe” Season): Efe’s constant reminder of his humble beginnings and Warri roots earned him massive nationwide support. He eventually won the show with a landslide victory.

Miracle (BBNaija 2018 – Double Wahala): Though not as loud about his struggles, Miracle’s modesty and hardworking-boy-next-door narrative resonated with the audience, landing him the prize.

Laycon (BBNaija 2020 – Lockdown): Laycon openly shared his background struggles and came across as a relatable, underdog figure. His vulnerability, mixed with talent, helped him gather one of the biggest fan bases in BBNaija history, ultimately crowning him winner.

It’s clear from these examples that Nigerians are naturally drawn to housemates who portray authenticity and resilience in the face of poverty.

For some fans, this remark makes Rooboy look bold and observant. For others, it might come across as insensitive, especially if the housemate in question is genuinely sharing her reality.

He's trying so hard to turn people against her. He thought she was gonna be nominated

@foreverkemmmm

He didn’t lie, the people know how Nigerians think, the Saviour complex mentality. They know Nigerian will favour poor, instead of entertainment hence why Imisi came with the strategy and why all the housemates are sucking up to her cos they feel she is winning.
